Our dog Berkeley is a 2-year-old Bernese Mountain Dog, and about 95 lbs. We knew that the breed was one that is known for health problems and short life spans. But we read about their temperaments and saw how completely fluffy and cuddly they were and we went for it.
Berkeley has had a host of health issues and through them all, she’s been a trooper and still the best and sweetest ball of fur you’ve ever met. One of the many issues large breeds and even older dogs suffer from is inflammation. We’ve combatted this in several ways the most important is prevention.
We keep her weight down by giving her timed and portioned meals. Supplementation and medication where needed. We’ve been most successful with a combination of “Pet-Friendly” Hemp Oil and Turmeric Paste. But she gets a little tired of the same thing all the time so I have to switch it up for her. So I decided to try and make cookies for her.
I’m not a veterinarian so do consult your vet before you go making these and do your research. Ultimately you are responsible for the health of your pet. With that said this is information I’ve found on the internet for your reading pleasure.
Peanut Butter is a favorite treat of many canines. Not only is it a good source of protein, but it also contains heart-healthy fats, vitamin B, niacin, and vitamin E. I always choose organic peanut butter made with only peanuts. Lot’s of ingredients mean you will have to find out which each one of them is and if they are pet safe. As far as I can see Peanuts are safe for dogs.
Bananas are high in potassium, vitamin B6, and vitamin C. In fact, sometimes veterinarians recommend this fruit as a healthy alternative to fatty, salty treats. The fruit is also high in fiber, which can help if your dog is having gastrointestinal problems, and magnesium, which promotes bone growth and helps the body produce protein and absorb vitamins.
Organic Coconut Oil is easily digested and can boost your dog’s metabolism. It also contains valuable lauric acid (which has antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-fungal properties), fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Including coconut oil in your dog’s diet or applying it to his or her skin has many health benefits.
Flaxseed is an extremely healthy food because they are loaded with essential fatty acids like omega-3. Omega-3 is otherwise known as alpha-linolenic acid or ALA. Flaxseed is also full of dietary fiber, protein, manganese, and lignans.
Omega-3 is an essential fatty acid that has been shown to be an important factor in the good health of a dog and animals in general. Omega-3 essential fatty acids, in particular, contribute to cell function, cell membrane structure, immune function, the health of your dog’s skin and coat, normal reproduction, and even the growth of your dog.
Turmeric has been shown to prevent and treat several chronic and serious diseases in humans, including cancer, arthritis, heart disease and more. Unsurprisingly, adding this supplement to your dog’s food can provide similar health benefits.
The key to the health benefits of turmeric lies in a compound called curcumin, a bright yellow chemical that makes up 2-6 percent of turmeric. The spice is understood to have anti-inflammatory and healing special effects worthy of a place in a blockbuster movie. Turmeric is safe for most dogs and will boost immunities and alleviate symptoms of many canine conditions.
Hemp Oil (CBD) While there’s no definitive scientific data on using CBD to treat dogs, there’s anecdotal evidence from dog owners suggesting it can treat pain, especially neuropathic pain, as well as helping to control seizures.
According to Dr. Klein, CBD is also used because of its anti-inflammatory properties, cardiac benefits, anti-nausea effects, appetite stimulation, anti-anxiety impact, and for possible anti-cancer benefits, although there’s no conclusive data on this use.

She does, she’s laying as close as she can to the cookie jar waiting for one. 😀
